[0] New Perl Documentation Tools [Tools]

If you've read the third edition of [1]Programming Perl (and who
hasn't?), you may have noticed this line in the preface:

Besides the customary search capabilities inherent in most
document-viewing programs, as of the 5.6.1 release of Perl,
each main Perl manpage has its own search and display
          capability.

Tom Christiansen has released the first version of these tools at
        [2]http://doriath.perl.com/misc/perlman-alpha0.tar.gz. The base
program is perlman, which allows you to access the rest of the
documentation (e.g., calling perlman perlop, or simply perlop).
It's very flexible, extensible, and Unix-like (though it is also
quite portable). There will also be a perlhelp program to search
all the available documentation at once, and perldoc for backward
compatability. This also includes the very useful pmpath from
        Christiansen's pmtools distribution.

So everyone go get it and start playing with it so we can include
it in perl 5.6.1 like the Camel promised. Documentation and
instructions for this early-alpha distribution are included.

[3] Perl 6 Updates [Perl Releases]

We now have over 200 [4]Perl 6 RFCs. [5]Number 200 is from Nathan
Wiger, "Objects: Revamp tie to support extensibility (Massive tie
        changes)."

In his [6]www.perl.com update this week, Mark-Jason Dominus
writes that the RFC phase will probably continue at least until
next month, when Larry Wall announces the shape of Perl 6 at the
[7]Linux Showcase. In the meantime, he's written up a [8]summary
of the main Perl 6 working groups and discussion lists.

There's also a new [9]mailing list, chaired by Dan Sugalski (the
internals pumpking for Perl 6), called perl6-source-control.

  [10] visiPerl+ 2.0 Released [Tools]

        [11]Help Consulting has released [12]visiPerl+ 2.0, a Perl IDE
with built-in FTP client, web server. It is written in Delphi and
runs on Windows, but there are plans to release a version for
        Linux in the future.

[13] Damian Conway and "Quantum Superpositions" in Chicago [User
  Groups]

[14]Tim Maher, SPUG Leader writes, "[15]Dr. Damian Conway,
celebrated Perl Guru and author of [16]Object Oriented Perl, will
be in Chicago in early October, continuing his Perlish rampage
across America that began last spring, giving a free talk,
Quantum Superpositions and the First Virtue, to the [17] Chicago
Perl Mongers on October 8th, from 3-5pm, in the CitiBank Tower.
Yes, this is the stupefyingly comical yet technically
inspirational talk made famous at this summer's YAPC and TPC 4.0
conferences. You can [18]read attendee comments on the [14]SPUG
(Seattle Perl Users Group) presentation of this talk.

Send email to Steven Lembark [19](lembark@wrkhors.com) of the
[17]Chicago Perl Mongers for more details on the October 8th
        event."

Head on over to [20]use Perl to read the [21]abstract, or for
information about [22]two fee-based seminars Conway will also be
        giving in Chicago.
